Today, Vevo has revealed its most watched video charts for 2016 across its different territories.
With huge video releases from some of the world’s biggest artists in 2016, creating appointment viewing, this year has seen five of the top ten videos gaining over a billion views worldwide.
The power and importance of music video, doesn’t stop there with 20bn monthly worldwide views, 2016 has been huge for Vevo with 26% YOY on growth. This year, mobile usage for Vevo also rose to 48%, overtaking desktop which is at 44%.
Justin Bieber, has certainly owned the year, with 3 entries in the Worldwide chart and tops both the UK and US chart, with his videos from PURPOSE: The Movement. ‘Sorry’ has seen a massive 1.8bn views.
Calvin Harris’ ‚This is What You Came For‘ has also seen huge views, crossing the 1bn mark in 2016. Adele’s ‘Hello’ has also stayed at the top with 1.2bn worldwide views for the year.
The Chainsmokers are the biggest success story of the year, hitting the charts with ‘Closer’, and their lyric video. They appear in top tens across the board for 2016, and have really taken this year by storm.

2016 has also been a very interesting year for views around the Vevo catalogue outside of new releases. On the day that David Bowie died, 11th January 2016, his catalogue saw the most views for any artist in a single day, with views of nearly 51m across his videos on Vevo.
In 2016 Vevo also saw some very interesting consumer trends around music video, surfacing from a report commissioned this year. This research indicated that the power of the video, is ever growing, holding huge currency among music fans and audiences. According to Vevo’s Music Audience Report, music video content is 2x as likely to be shared on social networks than audio tracks. Just over half of Vevo viewers reporting they are proactively sharing music content with their friends and on social media and 55% of Vevo viewers who watch videos shared with them being very likely to go on to share said video with others. Vevo also found that 40% of viewers are sharing music content on a weekly basis, often to show people music they haven’t heard/seen (63%) and to share their personal identity with others (54%).
